11/7/07 – Update: Here is a PDF copy of the unofficial results being published by Dekalb County. Thanks to Maria Alexander for the update.

Congratulations to all the winners — I am very happy with all of the people who won council seats and feel like, even with the two run-off elections that still need to happen, that this is the most promising council in our city’s history. I am very encouraged about Doraville’s future.

I’ll be curious to see what happens in the run-off. Pam Fleming is an unknown quantity to me, and I have no no idea how people in a run-off will react to her. I’m also curious about where the people who voted for Tom Hart will go — will they vote in the run-off election at all, or will they swing their votes one direction or another?

Looks like we’re not done with campaign season yet.

I suppose we could all go “round and round” with endless accounts of who did what, who said what, and speculate on which way people will lean under certain circumstances. That’s the nature of the beast.

Bottom line … we need change.

Just like getting a new roommate, “you never REALLY know how that will work until you live together.” I’d rather take a chance on someone new with the hope that this change will do us good. Ray may be a nice guy and I have no reason to believe otherwise, but I’m just not “all about” the good-ol-boy network. Historically, things just don’t get done.

As for John Noonan … yep, he’s a little rough around the edges. Of course, I found his conversation with me to be sincere and his depth of knowledge on the issues was a bit of a surprise.

Pam may be a nice lady as well (have not had the pleasure of learning first hand), but I just can’t get past the Anita Bryant thing.

  2. Lee says:

Yep I agree – I’m anxious to get the old boys’ club outta here. No argument there, nor about the Mayor taking credit for stuff Marlene and Jason did. And I have similar feelings about the Mayor – nice guy and not self serving, but he just doesn’t do anything.

However, at this point I think we will have a decent group no matter who wins the runoffs, and am trying to prepare for either eventuality. But I guess some people are still gonna want to do some pre-election trash talking :D .

  3. same ol' same ol' says:

    Pre-election trash talking?

One mans trash is another mans treasure.

I see unknowns with a = sign behind it with a finite answer.

    Meaning:

    2 2=4, not maybe 3 or 5, but 4 and only 4.

  4. ES says:

Well, this has been fun … but we must move on.
Looking forward, let’s have some thoughts on growth and progress.

We have lot’s of “green space” already. There are a few parks (though under-utilized)in my own back yard. I love having them there. However, there are a lot of places where some quality housing can be built to attract the crowd wanting to move back in from the burbs (this is, after all, the demographic big business is looking for). Can’t get a Publix or Kroger unless they believe they’ll make money.

I see the “quality of life” truck riding around. Not sure what’s up with that outside of a few lawns that need mowing being (outted). How about the stackers? How about the houses with 6 vans in the yard coming and going all the time? How about the grafitti? (GANGS! oh my, right here in River City).

Community events??? I love a parade.

I haven’t seen much done on these fronts for quite some time, this is why I voted the way I did (sorry Mr. Jenkins).

    Let’s have some forward-moving dialogue.

  5. same ol' same ol' says:

No offense ES, but you must have just moved here…….

  6. ES says:

Nope. Been here for 8 years.

  7. Bryan says:

The “Doraville Welcomes Diversity” signs were a response to a statement by Lamar Lang during a discussion of a parade permit for Hispanic pride, something to the effect of “Those people are a bunch of freeloaders.” While this was before the public could videotape (about 3 years ago), there were a couple of news cameras there. I think that the idea originated with Bob Tipton or Richard Weiner, of Northwoods, but whatever the source, it was grassroots politics.

The parks are a real sore spot for me. They are uniformly unkempt and poorly maintained. Brian and Maria should expect my lobbying for more attention shortly after their swearing in.

  8. interested observer says:

Thanks for the history. So the slogan is nothing “official,” then, but at least I understand it. I remember hearing about Mr. Lang’s comment along the line.

Seems to me that it might fall in Ms. Stephens’ lap to monitor the condition of the park grounds and see that maintenance keeps up with their end of things. And talking to council wouldn’t hurt at all. Maybe they need more budget money? Do we need more maintenance folks, do you think?

  9. same ol' same ol' says:

And what Lamar Lang said was very representative of his constituents as well.

What they say to your face and behind your back are two very different things.

  10. Eleanor says:

Well the best cure for that – if you don’t see it with your own eyes or hear it with your own ears – confront the person you believe is talking about you behind your back. Granted you might not get an honest answer all the time but I find that most people – if they are man enough or woman enough to say it then they are usually man enough or woman enough to admit they said it.

  11. same ol' same ol' says:

Actually, with respect to Lamar Lang, I stand corrected. He actually said it during a City Council meeting and in front of newspaper reporters. So I guess you have to hand it to Lamar, he was honest!! LOL!!

He stirred up a hornets nest too!!

  12. What's Going On Here? says:

Parades can be fun, but these days it seems pretty difficult to get a proper showing.

Life just moves too fast to expect people to stand by the roadside with the hopes of catching a glimpse of a float or a marching band.

What about a food festival with categories, judging, and cash prises? Maybe add a little folk art and some bands to round it out.

If we advertised the event people from outside Doraville might actually muster up the courage to come out here and check us out.

According to some other local blogs this place is a hell hole equivalent to a third world country. The reviews are not kind at all.

I absolutely love my little neighborhood, but I would never guess that this would be a safe and pleasant place to live from driving up and down Buford highway.

  13. same ol' same ol' says:

    The perception is very interesting.

Doraville is actually better than some of the areas such as East Atlanta and East Point. There isn’t even a contest with respect to crime control.

I’ve lived here almost 10 years and Buford Highway has changed dramatically since I’ve moved here. With all the new developements in Brookhaven and Chamblee it will eventually spill over into Doraville.

And I agree, the asians have been an asset to our community. They are bringing a lot of constuction into the area, but it does need to be controlled and Doraville needs to start a dialog with them.

The new Asian Village on Shallowford should be very interesting a be a big draw for the area.

“Downtown” Chamblee is about to go major constuction soon and will be like a little, densely developed town.

  14. same ol' same ol' says:

Everyone knows there will be a run off election between Marlene Hadden and Ray Jenkins for Mayor, right?

Then, why did I have campaign fliers left at my front door with copies of the campaign contributers for Marlene and Rays campaign from Tom Hart?

Does he think he will win with a write in vote?

And was that a Pam Fleming sign I saw in Bob Roches yard? hmmmm…

  15. BubbaRich says:

I wonder if they bypassed my house because of the Marlene for Mayor sign in the front yard? Or maybe it just blew away if they left it on the front door.

  16. ES says:

Probably bypassed … same story here. No effort was ever made to win me over, before or now. Guess it’s just easier to put out a few signs and count on your “friends” to do the legwork for you. Of course, we see how well that worked.

Based on what I heard regarding the Jenkins gathering on election night, it appears the expectations were greater than the reality. It is only hearsay since I wasn’t there, but if there is truth to it I could only say, “children, please … grow up.”

Historically, turnout for runoff elections is significantly smaller than the first time around. Sure hope history does not repeat itself.

  17. same ol' same ol' says:

That is why it is really important to GO OUT AND VOTE December6!!

Bob Roche already had a Pam Fleming sign in his yard, now he has a Ray Jenkins sign. And just as I predicted!!

Negative campaigning?? Trash?? People they were telling you the truth!! And you fell for the lies!!

  18. Joseph G says:

Everyone was saying that Roche was in the Hart-Spangler-Lowe camp. I think that Jenkins & Flemming are in their own distinct camp. If he’s supporting those two, then it would seem that all the fliers were wrong.

Personally, I think that Roche was working with both groups, against the Avers-Hadden-Noonan bloc. Not a big surprise considering who his opponent was. I don’t think it’s any big surprise now that he’s supporting Jenkins against Hadden.

  19. same ol' same ol' says:

Jenkins is staging a massive campaign for the runoff.

I even noticed a billboard for Jenkins campaign near the corner of McClave and Buford Highway.

Tom Hart is out campaigning for Ray Jenkins and so is Bob Roche. And like Joseph said, I’m not surprised. Personally, I knew it the whole time. Bob played a noncommittal campaign to get the “I don’t like negative campaigning” votes and the voters fell for it. So now Northwoods has a City Councilmen working for them that has never done anything for or with the community, has never really been active in Doraville government until he ran for office and never really clearly stated what his attentions were. So, obviously, since he has been elected, the mystery is unfolding and it ain’t pretty.

So if Jenkins gets Mayor and Pam City Council it will be Brian and Maria against “the good ol’ boys”.

And it’s no secret I’m for Marlene. The one that told the truth? So, again, please VOTE ON DECEMBER 6th!! And if you can’t, get a MAIL IN and VOTE BY MAIL!! It is really important.

And on a brighter note, HAPPY THANKSGIVING!!

  20. interested observer says:

The runoff is Tuesday, December 4th.

The December 3rd Council meeting will be at the Civic Center because of that.

    Happy Thanksgiving, y’all! :-)

  21. same ol' same ol' says:

    Thank you for the correction!!

    Yikes!!

    Still, VOTE!!

  22. interested observer says:

Sorry, SOSO, but one more correction. Jenkins’ billboard was up BEFORE the general election and not just for a “massive campaign” for the runoff.

So . . . I voted for Maria. To my knowledge, she didn’t say who she “supported,” though there are some who may know personally or by other means.

So what’s the difference between her and Roche? Different standards to which we’re holding candidates? And it would make sense that there would be one of two that they’d support.

If we’re to be forward thinking and welcome diversity and change, it doesn’t make sense to me to categorize folks by how they may support a person — or not. Much as I hate to admit it, LOL, even Spangler and Hart have done a few good things from time to time. :-)

  23. same ol' same ol' says:

    Sorry IO, I can’t say.

I know how everyone just hates “negative campaigning”.

  24. Joseph G says:

Personally, I like to hear candidates actually talk about what they’ll do once they get elected. If all we ever hear from someone running for office is what a jerk the opponent is–it still doesn’t let the voters know why we should vote for them.

What annoyed me most about a lot of the “negativity” in this past race was that most of it had little to nothing to do with issues facing the city. I honestly don’t care if someone put his yard signs in the same yard as another candidate or forgot to fill out a box on their disclosure forms–especially in some disclosure from a year and a half ago. If that’s the best any side can come up with they’re better off just sticking to the issues.

  25. interested observer says:

Well, since it was Chris who came out of the chute with the negative campaigning, I guess it would have taken a Christ-like person to not respond to that. LOL

Actually, I don’t know much more about Roche except for what he’s said, which is good as far as it goes — which is the beef as far as many are concerned — but I think it’s good for ANY of them not to tie themselves to the hip politically to anyone else. Their decisions should be on the issues that face the city as they come up.

  26. Lee says:

Well I agree with everything Joseph has said. And while I agree with IO that it’s not a good idea for anybody to tie themselves to the hip to anybody else, it’s neither a big deal nor very surprising that any council member has their preferences of other candidates they’d like to work with. It doesn’t mean they can’t work with their opponent should the opponent win, and saying you’d prefer any specific person to win doesn’t mean you’re “tied to the hip” to that person. All it means is you’d prefer to work with them over their opponent.

I do like the fact that Maria really didn’t ally herself to anybody publicly. But if people were trying to be ridiculous they could say that this amounts to waffling or not being clear on where she stood. Anybody can make a negative thing out of anything if they really want to. I mean is Bob Roche the guy who “isn’t clear about his position on anything” or is he the guy who “is tied to the hip to Tom Hart”? It seems that anything one’s opponent does is negative, while the same thing is somehow positive if the person they support does it.

So, whatever. Like Joseph said it’s all much ado about nothing. I thought Monday’s council meeting was extremely positive and I’m looking forward to getting the runoff over with, and moving forward with whoever we have.

  27. same ol' same ol' says:

Speaking of the City Council meeting, supposedly Tom Hart was on the agenda, what did he have to say, just from morbid curiosity?

  28. Lee says:

LOL… not much. A lot of what he’d intended to cover was already addressed by previous people on the agenda. I frankly don’t remember what he said :D , but it wasn’t a whole lot – he was barely up there for 2 minutes.
