There has been some speculation lately on e-mails sent back and forth, both on the Northwoods mailing list and also between some constituents and councilwoman Hadden (copied widely to many other folks in the community, including myself), that Mayor Jenkins may be grooming councilman Hart for the office of mayor if he decides not to run.
There is almost nothing to back this rumor up, except for the fact that the mayor and Hart have been spotted together at the local Waffle House and also that the mayor seems to let Mr. Hart have pretty much free reign to do what he sees fit when it comes to directing city employees.
Everything I had heard up to this point has indicated that Ray Jenkins would be running for mayor again this year, although I wouldn’t be surprised if he decided that the job was a lot more trouble than it was worth…especially if there is someone he considers a “worthy” successor waiting to step into his shoes.
The job of Mayor of Doraville is a full time position. From what I understand it pays $60K with free medical, retirement benefits and the free use of a car. So it’s pretty good pay with great benefits. I’m surprised more haven’t campaigned for it, especially people who have retired early from other jobs.
I’ve spoken with at least one potential candidate who said he wasn’t interested in the job because it pays too little.

….and many would probably not give up an established career for the position either.
