I haven’t really been paying attention to this thread – I don’t get e-mail updates for items that I don’t post myself. A quick glance indicates that it has gotten derailed into personal attacks and name-calling, so I am going to lock the thread & may go through later and delete some of the comments.
Please remember that it’s OK to disagree, but comments should not focus on personal attributes of others.
This conversation has fallen a bit far off the rails, since the original post was only about the upcoming candidate forum. To prevent it from getting any farther out of hand, I am going to close this thread. See you all at the candidate forum!
Bob Roche just sent me a note letting me know that Dekalb’s plan is also to build a football stadium there. That wasn’t clear to me in the conversation we had on Sunday.
That was according to Bob Roche. According to him the council has been briefed on this by the county & met in a special session to discuss it on Friday.
Everything I have heard from a number of sources leads me that the property is zoned for industrial only. I am still concerned that our council people – for whatever reason – may decide to zone the site to M-1.
In Northwoods, I’ve seen signs for Spangler, Bates, Hart and Calvert. Oakcliff Rd was plastered with Spangler signs when I drove through it last weekend. I don’t think everyone will fully ramp up until October, though.
Karen Pachuta sent me her campaign website, so I added it here. I hope some more candidates set up websites with information about their campaign as well.
We drove out of McClave towards 285 today, and I noticed that a light in the median of Buford Hwy had been knocked over. Someone must have run into it. I hope it gets replaced!

Just spoke to Bob Roche, who believes we should be holding onto the current money in city reserves to eventually invest in capital improvements to the city (like moving the police building next to K-Mart). Sounds interesting. I would like to hear about what ever happened to the “city plan.”
I was just having a conversation about this – wondering why there aren’t more office buildings in Doraville. Obviously, the current economic climate (and office space glut in Midtown and Buckhead) is not really amenable to any new construction right now… but with the close proximity to MARTA and 3 freeways (85, 285 and 400), you would think this would be a prime area for offices.
I’ve always thought that the city-government compound was a poor use of land – although I’m not sure now is the right time to do anything about that.
GH: I’ve had the same thoughts regarding the high-speed rail that is now being talked about for Atlanta. Why build it all the way to Downtown when you could build it to Doraville and let people take MARTA to wherever they need to go in the city from there? That solution would also allow Atlanta to keep working on the belt-line project without it requiring any major changes.
A lot of expenditures in the police department like the cop-cars & some other police equipment are funded outside the regular city budget – the police get to keep a percentage of what they confiscate in drug busts. What they can use that money for is very limited for. I have a feeling that maintenance on all those cars (and tanks) must fall within the city’s regular budget. Someone else probably knows better.
I am well aware that the bottom has fallen out of the market for almost all developments right now. Those that have financing are carefully considering their next moves, and most others cannot get financing at all as things stand.
Even if that’s the case, though, I don’t think the city should leap at any “development” idea that is presented just because it will be good for the developers. If the land where the GM Plant is located gets locked into a football stadium scheme, that is basically sealing the fate of this city for years to come.
Those of us who live here would experience increased traffic, great expanses of parking lots, and probably see no uptick in businesses that serve locals. Looking at it as a home-owning citizen and a voter, I don’t see how this would help my already struggling property values.
I just hope that careful consideration to these ideas is given, and a full and fair evaluation of the consequences be made.
I agree. I also think that there should be more sidewalks in the busy streets in our neighborhood. There are too many times when you have whole families walking down the middle of the street in the dark because there s no sidewalk. It’s dangerous.
The Mayor has said that there will have to be a re-vote. My question is would that re-vote happen on Dec 2 with the run-off elections, or would it be held at some other time in the future?
Allen: I updated the numbers based on the new AJC total. They match up closer to what Bob Roche says he has seen at city hall. I’ll make changes if there are any other big swings.
Congratulations, Bob – great work on pushing this through! I know it was one of your campaign goals since being elected to office, and I’m glad you were able to make it happen.
Congratulations to all the council members who voted for this, also. This does a lot to help make Doraville stand out (in a good way) in Metro Atlanta.
I’ll post final results when they come through. It looks like Jill Chambers has probably won her re-election, although not all the votes are in yet. The homestead exemption for seniors in Doraville did pass by a large margin. Strangely, the annexation vote has not been counted at all yet – and I am wondering if that has something to do with the confusion that Dave has been writing about for the past several weeks.
The secretary of state website does not have the annexation issue listed (that I can find), so I suggest tracking results for Dekalb County on the AJC website here:
